Consistency matters more than precision. Feed logged sometimes as Feed and sometimes as Hay splits one real number across two lines and makes the year-end view harder to read.
Per-Animal vs. Shared Costs
Some costs belong to one goat — a vet call for a specific doe, a registration fee. Others are herd-wide: hay, fencing, minerals.
Herd Manager handles both. Direct costs attach to the animal; shared costs spread across active goats to give a per-goat estimate. That's what powers the true cost of a goat figure, and it's usually higher than people expect.
Dividing hay across active goats assumes they eat roughly equally, which a dry yearling and a doe in late gestation don't. It's directionally right and useful for decisions; it isn't cost accounting.
Recurring Expenses
Set regular costs — feed deliveries, insurance, a lease payment — to recur rather than re-entering them.
Feeding Into Other Views
Expenses flow through to:
- Tax reports grouped into Schedule F categories
- Budgets as actuals against plan
- Per-animal P&L, alongside income, for realized profit on animals that have sold
