Adding a Goat​

  1. Go to the 🐐 Herd tab
  2. Tap + Add Goat
  3. Fill in what you know — only the name is required
  4. Save

Key Fields​

Required

  • Name — barn name or registered name, whichever you use day to day

Status​

Status is one field covering an animal's whole relationship to your herd:

Active — In Herd · For Sale · Coming Soon · Sold · Processed (Meat) · Deceased · Retired · External Reference

Only Active goats count toward the free plan's 10-goat limit — see Free vs Unlimited.

External Reference is the one worth understanding

It's for animals in your goats' pedigrees that you don't own — a sire from another farm, a grandam you never met. They appear in family trees and inbreeding calculations but stay out of herd counts, daily care, and pen assignments. The app asks you to confirm when you switch a goat to or from External, since it changes where they show up.

Setting Up Parentage​

Sire and dam can come from:

  • Your herd — any goat already in your records
  • An external parent — name, farm, and registration for an animal you don't own
  • Global search — goats other farms have shared to the community pedigree database

Parentage is what unlocks the Pedigree view and COI calculations. It's worth doing even roughly.

You Don't Have to Do It All at Once​

Add names and breeds first, fill in the rest over time. The app is useful from the first goat.

If you already have records somewhere — a spreadsheet, registration papers, a photo of a barn list — see Importing Existing Data rather than typing them in.
