Importing Existing Data
Already have goat records in a spreadsheet or another app? Herd Manager's smart importer can bring them in.
Supported Formats
- CSV files (.csv)
- Excel files (.xlsx, .xls)
- Tab-separated files (.tsv)
How to Import
- Go to Settings → Import Data
- Choose your file format (CSV / Excel)
- Upload your file
- The smart importer will automatically detect columns and map them to Herd Manager fields
- Review the mapping — adjust any columns that weren't matched correctly
- Tap Import to bring your goats in
Column Mapping
The importer recognizes common column names like:
| Your Spreadsheet Column | Maps To |
|---|---|
| Name, Goat Name, Animal Name | Goat Name |
| Breed | Breed |
| DOB, Birth Date, Date of Birth | Date of Birth |
| Sex, Gender | Sex |
| Registration, Reg #, ADGA # | Registration Number |
| Sire, Father, Sire Name | Sire |
| Dam, Mother, Dam Name | Dam |
| Color, Colour | Color |
| Status | Status |
| Tag, Tag #, Ear Tag | Tag Number |
If a column isn't recognized, you can manually assign it during the mapping step.
Tips for a Clean Import
Prepare Your Spreadsheet
- Make sure the first row contains column headers
- Use consistent date formats (MM/DD/YYYY works best)
- One goat per row
- Remove any blank rows or summary rows at the bottom
Start Small
Try importing 5-10 goats first to verify the mapping looks right, then import the rest.
After Importing
After import, review your goats in the Herd tab. You may want to:
- Add photos to each goat
- Link sires and dams (if they weren't matched automatically)
- Set up health protocols
- Enter milk records for current lactations
