Kidding Season Workflow

Kidding season is the busiest six weeks of the year. This is the sequence that keeps it manageable.

Before

  1. Check every breeding is recorded with an accurate date. Everything downstream — due dates, tasks, alerts — is built on those dates
  2. Verify due dates on the Calendar. For pasture breedings, note the whole kidding window, not one date
  3. Let the auto-generated tasks work. Pre-kidding CDT and Selenium/BoSe reminders create themselves from due dates — you don't need to add them
  4. Turn on kidding notifications if they aren't already. Kidding Due and Kidding Overdue are on by default, and a doe due within about six hours overrides quiet hours
  5. Fill in emergency info — vet and after-hours numbers. Do it now, not at 3am
  6. Work through the kidding checklist for supplies and stall setup

During

  1. Watch the Breeding tab for does approaching their window
  2. Use the kidding checklist as labour starts
  3. Record the kidding afterwards — labour, assistance, placenta, and per-kid details. Kid profiles are created automatically, so this is the one entry that matters most
  4. Log birth weights while you're there. It's thirty seconds and it's unrecoverable later
  5. Record the first-day care — navel, colostrum, selenium
Record it after, not during

Get the kids dry, breathing, and nursing. The app will still be there in an hour. Nobody has ever lost a kid because the paperwork was late.

After

  1. Start a lactation for each freshened doe — this is what enables days-in-milk, curves, and 305-day projections
  2. Begin logging milk
  3. Work the nursery — kids appear automatically, with milestones for disbudding (~day 7), CD&T (~day 42), banding, and weaning. Log the health record and the milestone ticks itself off
  4. Weigh kids regularly — the nursery's Weigh All runs the whole group in one pass. Falling intake shows up on the scale before it shows anywhere else
  5. Log bottle feedings for any kids you're supplementing
  6. Match kids to reservations and update your waiting list
