Planned Breedings

Planning a season and recording a breeding are different jobs. Planned breedings let you sketch out who goes with whom months ahead without touching your actual breeding records.

Where to Find It

Each goat's profile also shows any plans involving that animal.

Creating a Plan

Plans come out of the Breeding Planner. Analyze a doe and buck, then save the pairing with:

  • Target year and season — fall 2026, spring 2027
  • Status — planned, active, completed, cancelled
  • Goals and notes — why this pairing, what you're selecting for
  • A genetics snapshot — the coefficient of inbreeding and match rating at the time you planned it

Nothing about a plan affects your herd records. It's a decision written down.

The COI Snapshot

Every plan stores the inbreeding coefficient calculated when you created it, so a pairing that's too close gets caught while it's still an idea.

COI is only as good as the pedigrees behind it

An incomplete pedigree produces a COI that reads lower than the true relatedness — missing ancestors can't reveal shared ones. Treat a low number from a thin pedigree as unknown, not safe. If you've extended or corrected pedigrees since planning, re-run the analysis for current figures.

Printing the List

🖨️ Print on the Planned Breedings card produces a clean list for the barn wall or a PDF to share with a co-breeder. It contains:

  • A checkbox column for working through the list
  • Doe, registration or tag, buck, COI, match rating, status, and notes
  • Rows grouped by season, sorted alphabetically by doe so you can find an animal fast
  • A By Buck summary — each buck with his assigned does and a count, which is the view you actually want when sorting pens

The printout respects whatever filters you have set, and says so at the top when something is being excluded, so a printed sheet is never quietly incomplete.

Use your browser's print dialog to save it as a PDF rather than printing on paper.

From Plan to Breeding

When the breeding happens, record it normally and link it to the plan. The plan moves to completed and stays as a record of what you intended — useful the following year when you're deciding whether it worked.

Filtering

Filter by year, season, status, doe, or buck. Cancelled plans and seasons older than last year are hidden by default; both can be toggled back on.
