Genetic Planning & COI

Make informed breeding decisions with genetic tools built into Herd Manager.

Inbreeding Coefficient (COI)​

The COI measures how related two goats are. Lower COI means less inbreeding. The app calculates COI automatically when both the sire and dam have pedigree data entered.

Interpreting COI​

  • 0-3% — Very low, unrelated
  • 3-6% — Low, acceptable for most breeders
  • 6-12% — Moderate, some line breeding
  • 12%+ — High, tight line breeding or inbreeding

Planning a Breeding​

Before breeding, check the COI of potential pairings. Go to the Breeding tab → Plan Breeding to see predicted COI for different buck/doe combinations.
